United For Justice, Inc. and their community partners, including Bombay Beach Community Services District, Niland Chamber of Commerce, and West Shores Property Owners Association/Community Center, present the "Salton Sea Shores Climate and Equity Project I." This initiative aims to address environmental and social challenges along the Salton Sea shoreline communities by planting over 250 trees and implementing various measures to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas impacts. The project targets areas like Bombay Beach, Niland, and Salton Sea Beach, which suffer from environmental hazards due to the sea's receding waters. By installing air monitors, educating residents about air quality, and engaging stakeholders, the project seeks to enhance the quality of life for residents while providing valuable data and insights to support statewide initiatives. Through quarterly meetings, educational sessions, and collaboration with agencies like CALFIRE, the project aims to create positive change and advocate for the needs of disinvested, disadvantaged and underserved communities.
The Salton Sea Basin Monitoring Network will consist of deploying a total of 3 AQ Mesh monitors, two at the East Shores of the Salton Sea Shoreline communities and one at the West Shores of the Salton Sea Shoreline community. The creation of a map on the website will be available to provide real-time data for members of the community to reference, which will allow residents to take precautions. We will monitor the following criteria pollutants and gases, particulate matter (PM) 1, PM 2.5, PM 10, nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), sulfur dioxide (SO2), rhodium, and barometric pressure; with the purpose of expanding the network as funding is allocated. Additionally, we will have 2 kickoff events and 6 community educational/outreach meetings throughout the East and West Shores of the Salton Sea Shoreline communities.
